Auburn Middle School Library uses lexile measurement. In very basic terms, a lexile is a reading measure that matches student reading ability with text difficulty, enabling teachers, parents, and students to select books that match a reader's abilities and interests. AMS has been using lexiles and the Reading Counts program for over ten years. All AMS students know their lexile score, and can track changes in their lexile through the Scholastic Reading Inventory which is administered 3 times per year, as scheduled by the language arts teachers. All AMS fiction books, as well as many nonfiction books, are lexiled. Beginning in September of 2011, students will be able to access quizzes on any title that Scholastic Reading Counts offers a quiz for, including AMS library books, books they have at home, or those they check out of the public library. All AMS language arts teachers use lexiles with certain student reading assignments throughout the year, as do some teachers in other courses. Parents are encouraged to visit the AMS Library for further information on this program. --Mrs. Joyce, LMS
