About Our Program

Meet Our Library Media Specialist
Jean Hanigan E-mail: jhanigan@mcps.org

My name is Jean Hanigan and I am your child(ren)’s media specialist/librarian.  I moved to the area 6 years ago from the St. Louis area. My husband is a faculty member in Dairy Science at Virginia Tech.  We have 2 boys (age 26 and 25) that are in the Navy and at the University of Arizona as a graduate student, respectfully.  I was born and raised in Iowa, the third of seven children.  I have 9 years of teaching experience in the elementary classroom in Iowa, California and Missouri.  I received my Masters of Library Science from the University of Missouri in Dec. 2000.  I was an elementary librarian in Missouri for 8 years.  I was at Shawsville Elementary from 2006 - 2010. I am very excited to be at Eastern Montgomery Elementary.  I look forward to meeting the parents and working with all the delightful children here.

Our Mission

The mission of the Eastern Montgomery Elementary Library is to prepare students for life-long learning through encouraging and promoting effective use of ideas and information and cultivating a love of reading.  The library program plays a critical role in our students educational program through providing instructional activities, resources, facilities and technologies for students and staff to become more effective and efficient users of information.

The library media specialist works collaboratively with classroom teachers to develop lessons that incorporate information literacy skills with the Virginia Academic Standards. Our lessons and projects help prepare students for the 21st Century by helping them become informed decision makers and effective and discriminating users of information and technology.

Check out Policy

Number of items: KG-3 graders may check out 1 item at a time, while 4th and 5th graders may check out 2 items at a time.  Students may keep items for one week and are encouraged to return items as soon as they are finished so they can check out new ones.

Overdue Fines: There are no fines; however, students must return overdue items before new items may be checked out.

Lost Books: Students who lose or damage books beyond repair will be charged the replacement cost of the book.  Students may not check out another book until the lost or damaged book is found or paid for.

Schedule
Eastern Montgomery Library Media Center operates on a flex and fixed schedule, a combination of open access and scheduled classes.  All classes have a scheduled 30 minute library time during which they learn how to use the library and its resources as well as develop a joy of literature through read alouds, book talks, author studies, etc. On any day that works with their schedule, students may come to the library media center at any time - individually, in small groups, or with their entire class - to check out and return materials, to read for pleasure or information, to hear stories, or research topics for reports, using a variety of resources. Teachers may also schedule their class or small groups for additional instruction at any time.
