The Montgomery County School Board approved a preliminary budget for the 2013-2014 fiscal year for the purpose of a public hearing. The $96 million budget includes an increase in health insurance premiums, an increase in operating costs for new school buildings, an increase in employee compensation and restoration of some previously cut budget items. The details of the proposed budget are available online at http://www.mcps.org/budgetupdate/.
“The budget we are advertising for public hearing is a needs-based budget that shows exactly what is necessary for us to operate a high-quality education system in Montgomery County,” said Brenda Blackburn, division superintendent.
The public hearing will be held on Tuesday, January 29, at 7 p.m. at the County Government Center (755 Roanoke Street, Christiansburg).
“Public comment about the budget is integral to the budget process,” said Wendell Jones, school board chair. “We hope that citizens will be active not just in the school board process, but also with the state leadership and the Montgomery County board of supervisors as they begin to prioritize their budget.”
