Auburn Elementary School Receives $5,000 Gift from Food Lion

Auburn Elementary School has received $5,000 from the Food Lion Charitable Foundation.  The school will use the gift to purchase significant technology to enhance the presentation of curriculum software.  “This gift comes at such a great time for our school.  This money will allow us to update our lesson delivery methods to better meet the needs of all our students and allow us to use curriculum enhancement software in an effective and interesting manner,” said Kenneth Moles II, principal of Auburn Elementary School.

The project will incorporate SmartBoard technologies, LCD projectors, and School Pads.  This equipment will allow Auburn Elementary to use teaching strategies that better reach kids who are struggling with state and national standards, while also raising teaching abilities.  The project addresses two goals.  The first is to improve school-wide literacy within the content areas, allowing students the opportunity to investigate aspects of literacy within the context of math and science.  It engages them in skills related to reading, researching, and writing as they work on their projects.  Teachers will be able to broaden their resources using the technology to offer students more authentic learning experiences.  The second goal is to create an enhanced awareness of diversity.  The student population at Auburn is 97% Caucasian. Therefore, students need opportunities that expose them to experiences and information related to other cultures.  Teachers will be able to utilize the technology to create partnerships with students and mentors around the world.  The program is designed to help those students who are having difficulty mastering standards, as well as to provide enriched learning opportunities for students in need of further academic enrichment.  “The program will affect our entire student body and will impact our school for many years to come,” said Mr. Moles.
