Montgomery County Superintendent Spurs Excitement in Students Through the Superintendent’s “Getting Back to School” Science and Writing Camp

Superintendent Tiffany Anderson will have on her teaching hat as she engages third graders from Elliston and Shawsville in her “Getting Back to School” Summer Science and Writing Camp in an effort to get students excited and ready for the first day of school.  The camp’s enrollment was limited to 15 third graders in the Shawsville/Elliston strand, and principals recommended students from their schools that could benefit the most.  In the superintendent’s previous district, she ran three camps all year in which she taught 15 fourth graders in two strands after school.  Dr. Anderson stated that she considers this her way of remaining connected with students while helping to keep them energized about school.  The superintendent intends to track the attendance of the students engaged in this program, and she plans to follow the progress of this cohort of students as action research on how to ensure students who have had academic difficulties remain excited about school.

The summer camp will be held on August 14 through August 16 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.  The superintendent will explore various science activities with the small student group.  Breakfast, lunch and transportation will be provided. To ensure students are ready for the first day of school, the superintendent is providing every child with a new backpack that will contain his/her school supplies on the last day of the camp.  “I want to ensure every child feels prepared and ready to return to school on August 23, and I am excited to have the opportunity to teach and be a part of getting students energized about the start of school the following week.”
