Montgomery County Public
Schools Student Intervention Coordinator Recognized as Red Cross Community
Impact Hero
The Montgomery-Floyd Chapter of the American Red Cross last week recognized Doris Kauffman, Montgomery County Public Schools Student Intervention Coordinator in the Blacksburg and Shawsville strands, as a Red Cross Community Impact Hero.
“I am a new employee to the Montgomery County system and have been working with Doris since August 2006. I have been very impressed with Doris’ superior integrity. Doris is a genuinely caring person. She works hard and is a real advocate for families and students,” said Wynne Parker, school nurse at Kipps Elementary School who nominated Doris.
Through her position as student intervention coordinator, Doris assists families in need and crisis. She works with community agencies to provide families with resources; performs home visits, provides transportation for students and families as needed; works closely with school personnel, etc. Doris helped a local family who lost their home due to fire. She coordinated services for the family to provide clothing, shelter, and family tools. Doris assisted in ultimately providing a new home for the family.
“I could tell you many stories about how Doris has helped me and the students here at Shawsville Elementary School. She always greets you with such a warm smile, encouraging words and goes above and beyond to assist in many ways. We love her here at SES and she is truly our hero,” said Kendra Murphy, school nurse at Shawsville Elementary School.
The Red Cross honors individuals throughout the New River Valley for making a difference in the community through their actions. Good Samaritan Hero, First Responder Hero, and Disaster Relief Hero awards were also presented.
