Blacksburg High School Wins
the VHSL Group AA Wachovia Cup
The Virginia High School League (VHSL) recently announced that Blacksburg High School has won the coveted Group AA Wachovia Cup. The Wachovia Cup is awarded to the school in each group classification that has achieved the best overall record in VHSL state-level competition in 27 sports. BHS has won four Wachovia Cups previously in 1990, 1991, 1993, and 2003.
Wachovia Cups are presented for athletic and academic activities to the top school in each of the league’s enrollment groups. The winner of the Wachovia Cup is determined by a point system based on performance in state championship events. Points are awarded for all sanctioned sports. Blacksburg High School outscored second place Jamestown by 95 points. The Bruins were state champions in girl’s cross country, golf, and boy’s soccer; finished second in girl’s tennis and girl’s indoor track; and also earned points in girl’s/boy’s outdoor track, boy’s tennis, boy’s swim/dive, boy’s indoor track, and boy’s cross-country.
“Winning a state championship in a single sport is a remarkable achievement; it is the exceptional school that dominates VHSL competition in multiple sports throughout the year,” said Ken Tilley, VHSL executive director.
