Children
begin to refine reading skills in second grade and a primary focus for our
teachers is reading comprehension. There is a shift from teaching decoding
skills to working more with reading comprehension. In second grade,
students begin to assume more responsibility. They have daily at home practice
work in spelling and reading. Books are also selected and prepared at
home to share with classmates during Literature Circles. In social studies
they study Ancient Egypt, communities, American Indians, map skills, and basic
economics. In math, they compare whole numbers, recall basic addition
facts, learn estimation skills, tell time to the quarter hour and interpret
simple graphs.
