In the fall of 1994,
four committees of parents, teachers, community members, and school
administrators were formed to study the facility needs of Montgomery
County throughout each one of the four strands. Each of the committees was charged
with the responsibility of analyzing how the current space in each
building was being used and to present recommendations on how we could
improve our facilities to better meet the needs of our community and
children.
After a great deal of
research, each committee presented their findings, as well as, their
recommendations to the Montgomery County School Board. The recommendation of the Auburn
Strand was to consolidate Riner and Bethel Elementary Schools into one
school and use Riner Elementary School as a middle school. The School Board approved the
Auburn Strand plan and construction began on the new school in February of
1997. |
Construction
continued on the new school for the next sixteen months. The school
officially opened in the fall of 1998. Auburn Elementary School is
located in the southwestern part of Montgomery County in Riner,
Virginia. The site for the school, which is located directly behind
the football field of Auburn High School, was purchased from Ronald
Salmon.
When
opened the school had 29 classrooms with approximately 590 students. Jeff
Perry was the principal and Joanne Bolling was the assistant
principal. We now have 30
classrooms serving grades kindergarten through fifth with an enrollment of
approximately 580 students. Jeanette Warwick is now the principal
and Kenny Moles is the assistant principal. |
