READING PROGRAM
Title
I of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act has been the bedrock on which
federal aid to elementary and secondary education has been built since
1965. It provides extra instruction in reading and has helped to equalize
educational opportunity for our needs children at the local level. It has
been a catalyst for improving instruction in basic skills, for improving the
training of teachers and for increasing the involvement of parents in the
education of their children. Currently, it is the largest single program
of federal educational aide to elementary and secondary students.
We
are extremely fortunate to have a quality group of Title I teachers and
instructional aides. Our Title I staff work primarily with children in
grades kindergarten through third. Our main focus at Auburn is improving
the reading and writing skills of our children. Our Title I staff is
also responsible for Reading Recovery, which is a one-on-one, reading
intervention program.
