Register for the SAT online at www.collegeboard.com.  Students who register online will no longer receive an Admission Ticket in the mail.  Instead, they will need to print out the Confirmation and Admission Ticket from their Web registration.

 

Picture identification is required on the day of the SAT.  For students who do not have a photo identification card or passport, schools may provide such ID by completing a Student ID form.  It must be printed on school stationery, a photo must be attached, the school seal must be placed to overlap the photo, and the document must be signed in the presence of a school official.  Plan ahead to see Ms. Peters if you will need this form of identification.

College Applications

 

Seniors who still plan to apply to four-year colleges or to community college should not wait any longer to apply.  The admission deadline for many colleges has passed and those schools on rolling admissions are already filling the freshmen class.  At New River Community College, many of the classes fill early and even though you are accepted, you many not get into the particular classes or program you want. 

 

NRCC Admissions Applications,  Educational Foundation Scholarship Applications, and Student Financial Aid Applications/Loan Information Forms are now available in Guidance. 

 

NRCC Educational Foundation Scholarships are due by February 15th.

 

See Ms. Peters immediately if you need help completing your application.

 

Financial Aid Workshop

 

The annual Financial Aid Workshop for seniors and their parents will be held in the Christiansburg High School auditorium on January 23 from 7:00 – 8:30 p.m.  (In case of inclement weather, the make-up date will be January 31, 7:00 – 8:30 p.m.)

 

Remember that many colleges and universities expect to receive information from the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by March 1.  Use FAFSA on the WEB to expedite the process and get your information there on time!  Go to www.fafsa.ed.gov.

Scholarships

 

Gates Millennium Scholars Program – This scholarship is for students who have significant financial needs and strong leadership capabilities.  The Program will select one thousand students per year to receive this important scholarship.Students are eligible to be considered if they:

·         are African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian Pacific Islander American, or Hispanic American;

·         are a U. S. citizen;

·         have a minimum unweighted GPA of 3.3;

·         will be enrolling for the first time at a U. S. accredited college or university;

·         have demonstrated leadership abilities;

·         meet the Federal Pell Grant eligibility criteria

2008 Sam Walton Community (Wal-Mart) Scholarship - The Community Scholarship

is a non-renewable $1,000 award for the first year of undergraduate study at an approved

accredited college or university.  To qualify, a student must be a graduating high school senior and may not be a Wal-Mart or Sam's Club associate, or the child or legal dependent of a Wal-Mart or Sam's Club associate.  The application is available online

at  www.walmartfoundation.org.  The application deadline is January 14, 2008.

 

National Association of Federal Education Program Administrators Scholarship -

The purpose of this scholarship program is to financially support post-secondary education for qualifying seniors or high school graduates who are attending their first

year of college.   NAFEPA offers three (3) different scholarships:  (1) Stanley J. McFarland; (2) John A. Pfaff; and (3) Iva McCants.  Each of the three scholarship grants is $1,500.  Application packets are available in Guidance.  Completed application  packets must be returned to Ms. Peters no later than January 25, 2008.

 

Virginia Tech Pamplin Scholarship for Virginians - This $1,000 scholarship is given

to one senior from each high school in Virginia.  Any senior applying to Virginia Tech

is eligible to apply for this scholarship.  From the pool of Pamplin Leaders, students

can compete for a full tuition scholarship for sophomore through junior years.  Applications are available in Guidance.  Deadline is February 1, 2008.

 

Commitment to Agriculture Scholarship – One-time awards of $1,500 will be made

to 100 high school seniors who plan to pursue a career in an agriculture-related field.  Applications are available online at www.monsanto.com or www.nafb.com.  All applications must be submitted no later than February 15th.

 

Gloria Wille Bell and Carlos R. Bell Scholarship – This scholarship program will provide $80,000 over four years of undergraduate study to students selected from the Commonwealth of Virginia, with a preference given to residents of the Gloucester, Virginia area.  Students must be accepted into the University of Michigan in the College of Engineering or the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts.  Applications are available in Guidance and must be received no later than February 1, 2008.

 

Society of Cincinnati in the State of Virginia Scholarship – This $3,000 scholarship will be awarded to four Virginia high school senior essay contest winners.  Essay contest guidelines are available in Guidance.  Entries must be postmarked no later than

February 22, 2008.

 

Virginia Golf Foundation Scholarship -  Eligibility criteria for this scholarship include academic achievement, an interest in golf (skill level not important), citizenship, character and financial need.  Applications are available in Guidance. The application deadline is February 29, 2008.

 

 

 

 

 

Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation, Inc. – The foundation provides scholarship assistance to deserving sons and daughters, or grandchildren of current or former United States Marines.  Additional information and application criteria are available in Guidance.  The deadline for applications is April 16th.

 

Morrow-Stevens Foundation – This is a private charitable organization whose purpose is to provide college scholarships that include tuition, fees, room and board, and a book stipend.  These need-based scholarships are limited to Virginia residents who have been accepted to an accredited four-year public college or university.  Applicants must possess a GPA of 3.0 or higher and demonstrate financial need based on the FAFSA.  Applications are available in Guidance and must be postmarked no later than March 15.

 

The John R. Lillard Scholarship Program -  The Virginia Airport Operators Council is sponsoring a scholarship for a high school senior who has a minimum

3.75 unweighted GPA, is planning a career in the field of aviation, and has been accepted into an aviation related program at an accredited college.   Applicants must submit an essay “Why I Wish to Pursue a Career in Aviation.”  Additional information and application requirements are available in Guidance.   The deadline for receipt of completed application packets is February 20, 2008.

 

Willard G. Plentl Aviation Scholarship – The Virginia Department of Aviation is sponsoring a $1,000 scholarship to a Virginia high school senior who is planning to pursue an aviation career in a non-engineering area.  Examples of non-engineering aviation careers include (but are not limited to) pilots, aviation maintenance technicians, aviation managers, etc.  Applicants must have an unweighted GPA of at least 3.5.  Additional information and application requirements are available in Guidance.  The application deadline is

February 20, 2008.

 

The 2008 Community Foundation of the New River Valley Scholarship Program -

The Community Foundation is active in developing scholarship funds to support New River Valley applicants interested in attending an accredited two- or four-year college,

university or post high school vocational institution.

 

How to Apply for a Community Foundation Scholarship

 

Step 1

Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).  This for should be available in the Guidance Office in December.

 

Step 2

Send a copy of the Student Aid Report (SAR) to the Community Foundation as

soon as it is received from the FAFSA.

 

Note:  Students who do not file a financial aid form with FAFSA and send a copy of

the SAR to the Community Foundation will not be considered for a scholarship.

 

 

 

Step 3

Contact the colleges to which you are applying to see if they require you to complete

additional financial aid forms.  Pay close attention to deadlines!

 

 

 

Step 4

Fill out the Community Foundations scholarship application form and indicate for which

scholarship(s) you would like to apply.   This application is available in Guidance

and is included in the October issue of Guidelines that was distributed to seniors

in Mrs. Turner's English 12 classes.

 

The Community of the New River Valley Scholarships

 

      The T. Scott Eaton Scholarship:

Eligibility:

·         Applicants from Floyd, Giles, Montgomery, Pulaski and Radford

·         Applicants pursuing a post-secondary degree in theatre or fine arts

Evaluation Criteria:

·         Financial need

·         Minimum GPA of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale

Typical Scholarship Award:  $500

 

The Juanita Shelor Hall Memorial Scholarship:

Eligibility:

·         Auburn High School Students Only

·         Applicants pursuing an undergraduate degree in Business or Education

Evaluation Criteria:

·         Financial need

·         Academic achievement considered

            Additional Information:

            This scholarship is renewable.  Please contact CFNRV for renewal requirements.

            Typical Scholarship Award:    $1,000

 

      The Warren Lloyd Holtzman Freedom Scholarship:

            Eligibility:

·         Applicants pursuing education at a college, university, or post-secondary

      vocational school

·         Students in Montgomery County Alternative Education programs,

      Including:  Tekoa, Future Works, Independence Secondary, Phoenix

      Center, Rivendell, ISAEP and in-school GED

      Evaluation Criteria:

·         Financial need

·         Minimum GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale

·         Note:  Applicants must submit an additional essay about the benefits

      to society of personal freedom, initiative, calculated risk-taking and a

      free enterprise system.  The essay should be no less than 500 words

     and no more than 2,000 words.

     Additional information:

·         The purpose of this fund is to support disadvantaged people regardless of race,

       religion or sexual orientation.

                         Typical Scholarship Award:

·         $900 for a two-year institution

·         $1800 for a four-year institution

 

The Allen Mandelstamm Scholarship:

Eligibility:

·         High school graduates or students with a GED

·         Applicants from Floyd, Giles, Montgomery, Pulaski and Radford

·         Applicants pursuing a postsecondary degree at a college/university

Evaluation Criteria:

·         Financial need

·         Minimum GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale

Additional Information:

·         The purpose of this fund is to support disadvantaged

       people regardless of race, religion or sexual orientation.

·         Typical Scholarship Award:   $1,000

 

                    The Auxiliary of Radford Community Hospital/CNRVMC Scholarship:

                                Eligibility:

·         High school graduates or students with a GED

·         Applicants from Floyd, Giles, Montgomery, Pulaski and Radford

·         Applicants pursuing a career in nursing or a related health profession

Evaluation Criteria:

·         Financial need

·         Average or above average academic ability

Additional Information:

This scholarship is renewable. Typical Grant Amount:  $1,000

             

                     The A. Phillip Meadows Leadership Scholarship:

                     Eligibility:

                              Applicants from Floyd, Giles, Montgomery, Radford and Pulaski

                              Applicants pursuing a post-secondary degree at Virginia Tech

                     Evaluation Criteria:

                              Financial need

                              Strong academic achievement

                              Demonstrated leadership qualities and strong potential for continued

                              growth and development

                              Active involvement and participation in school, church and/or

                              community service

                     Typical Scholarship Award:  $500

 

             The Adrienne Marie Rhudy Memorial Scholarship:

                    Eligibility:

                             Applicants from Floyd, Giles, Montgomery, Pulaski and Radford

                             Applicants pursuing a post-secondary degree at a two- or four-year

                             college or university

                    Evaluation Criteria:       

                             Demonstrated ability to overcome adversity; Minimum GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale

                             Note:  Applicants must submit an additional essay demonstrating his/her

                             ability to overcome adversity and to be strengthened thereby.

                    Typical Scholarship Award:   $1,700

 

            The Wings Fund:

                    Eligibility:

                    Applicants from Floyd, Giles, Montgomery, Pulaski and Redford

                    Applicants pursuing education at a college, university, or vocational school

                          Older and non-traditional students are encouraged to apply

                    Evaluation  criteria:  Financial need

                    Typical Scholarship Award:   $1,000
