Academic Letter

In
the fall of 1985 Auburn High School instituted the Academic Letter for
the purpose of encouraging and recognizing academic excellence. The sponsors
invite all high school students to make application to earn the Academic
Letter. Students may apply each year for a letter or bar during their tenure
in high school, grades 9-12. To receive the letter or bar, students must
earn a total of 75 academic points based on semester grades and academic
competions.
Student Responsibility:

The student must make
application for the letter.

The student must submit
references from two academic area teachers.

The student must submit
semester grades and any additional points earned during that time.

The student may not request
consideration if he/she has earned a "D" in any class during the year.

Academic Letter applications
may be obtained from and submitted to the librarian.
Academic Points:
-
Yearly point requirement
of 75 for both academic letter and bar.

Letter grades awarded
in content area classes: English, Math, Science, Social Studies, Foreign
Language. (A=6 pts., B=4 pts., C=2pts.) Only semester grades are considered.

Participation in academic
competitions such as MACC, National Latin Exams, Forensics, Debate, NRCC
Math Contest, and Roanoke Science Olympiad (1 point for each).

Selection of Honors classes
(1/2 point per semester for each) and AP Courses (1 point per semester
for each).

Participation in summer
"Academic" seminars, institutes, or workshops (1-5 pts. based on sponsor
recommendation).

Consideration of PSAT/SAT
testing of any kind (900=1 pt., 1000=2pts., 1100=3pts., 1200+ = 4 pts.).

Publication of Writing
Pieces (must provide copy of actual publication, outside of class, in which
the work is used: 1-5 pts.).

Compilation of a Student
Portfolio, which includes samples of a student's best academic work (1-5
pts.).

Academic Fair participation
(ribbon=1 pt., medallion=3pts., plaques=5pts.).

Honors Reading Program
participation and completion of program requirements: 3 points for each
book submitted.

Approval of other criteria
reflecting academic achievement may be requested by the appropriate sponsor
(1-5 pts.)
