Honors Reading Program

Students may participate in the Honors Reading Program and receive recognition at theAcademic Awards Assembly and points toward an Academic Letter. Students who choose to participate are required to read six books during the academic school year from an approved list. Participation in the program can take place two different ways. Students may mix the first and second methods of participation. Book lists, specific guidelines, sample book reviews, participation forms, and additional information are available in the library.

First Method: Book Discussion

The first method allows students to choose a title from the approved list, keep a log of their ideas and thoughts of the reading material, and participate in a discussion of the book with an adult leader. When a student chooses a book, he or she should notify the sponsor (discussion leader) of the book listed. The sponsor will determine when and where a conference on the book will be held and will go over the reading log and discuss the text. If a satisfactory discussion has taken place, the sponsor will sign the student's book discussion form indicating the book will count toward the six books required for the Honors Reading Program.

Second Method: Critique

The second method allows students to choose a title from the approved list and upon completing the book, write a critique following specific guidelines. The critique and completion form will be given to the sponsoring teacher for approval. The student's critique will be displayed in the library and become part of a Critic's Corner Review Guide.
