In high schools throughout the state of Virginia, students honor favorite books and their authors.
 

Book titles are selected and announced each spring for the coming year. Books on the list must be recognized as noteworthy in the field of young adult literature, published within five years prior to the ballot on which it appears, and appropriate for the level for which it is nominated.
 

To qualify to vote for a favorite book, participants must read at least four of the nominated books from the high school level.
 

The winning book is selected by popular vote of the participating high school students throughout Virginia.
