Academic Honor Policy

Personal honor and integrity are encouraged in students at Blacksburg High School in order that they may assume responsibility for academic honesty.  The administration and faculty have the responsibility and the obligation to follow and enforce the Blacksburg High School Academic Honor Policy.

Cheating means the giving or receiving of unauthorized help during a test/quiz or work assigned to be done individually without assistance.  Plagiarism, the misuse of a published work without crediting the source, is also cheating.

Students cheating will be given a zero for that particular test or assigned work.  Cheating may also result in suspension from participating in extra-curricular activities and/or other disciplinary action.

Guidelines:  Students may not talk at any time during tests unless allowed by the teacher.  All students' questions must be directed to the teacher, with the teacher's permission, during tests.  Cover sheets are encouraged during test taking situations.  Teachers will specify instructions for homework, term papers, and for each assignment.  Teachers must clarify the specific application of the Academic Honor Policy in their classes.  The Academic Honor Policy will be posted in each classroom.

Procedures for a violation of the Academic Honor Policy are as follows:
The teacher must give a zero for the assignment and contact the parent/guardian about the offense.  The incident will be reported by the teacher to the student's counselor so counseling may be scheduled.  A misconduct report will be filed in the student's discipline folder.
