ESL teachers base their instruction on student needs and the English Language Proficiency Standards adopted by the Virginia Board of Education: World-Class Instructional Design and Assessment (WIDA) English Language Proficiency Standards. Therefore, all newcomers will be assessed the first few weeks of school to identify the level of proficiency of the new student. If the student’s score is between a 1-Entering or 4.7-Bridging, the student will be enrolled in an ESL class. However, the parent has the right not to accept this recommendation.
