Welcome to the guidance page. My name is Ms. Read. I'm the
school counselor at Christiansburg Elementary School. I'd like to tell you a
little bit about what an elementary school counselor does.

Counsels Students

The school counselor works with individual students to help
them better express their concerns and problems, better understand themselves
and others, and work toward positive educational, personal, and social
development. The Principal, teachers and parents may refer a child for
individual counseling at any time. A parent can access these services by
speaking with the counselor by phone (ph: 381-6138), or in person by
appointment.

The counselor also conducts small group counseling to
enhance developmental areas such as friendship and social skills, anger
management, conflict resolution, study skills, academics and self esteem.
Teachers may enroll children in these groups by filling out a form sent out by
the school counselor. If a need for group counseling arises during the school
year, the Principal, teachers and parents can contact the counselor to arrange
this at any time.

Teaches Classroom Guidance

The school counselor teaches guidance lessons in the regular
classroom to help students develop an awareness of self, others, and the world
around them. The students' academic skills, social and career development are
fostered through a planned series of guidance activities offered during the
school year.

Consults With Others

The school counselor consults with teachers to evaluate
behaviors and individual needs of the student, to assist in enhancing the total
development of the student, and to provide suggestions for behavior management.

The counselor consults with parents to promote effective
parenting skills, to help with problems that may be occurring at home, and to
follow up on concerns regarding the progress of the child.

The school counselor consults with administrators to provide
the most effective learning atmosphere schools can offer.

The school counselor consults with trained professionals
outside the school resource personnel, in special cases, when needed.

Coordinates Other Activities

The school counselor works with the special services staff
to better serve students with special needs.

The school counselor works with community agencies such as
Social Services to address all the needs of the students.

The school counselor works with many school committees that
function to serve all students' needs.

The school counselor trains the whole school population in
the use of a school-wide peer mediation program.
