As a reading teacher at CES, Rhonda Phillips counts it a great privilege to be among such a hard-working staff and bright students. Her teaching passion is reading and writing.
Originally from West Virginia, she has made Montgomery County her home since 1992 (except for a brief 15 months in Sydney, Australia in 1998-1999).
Rhonda earned her B.A. in education from Concord College (now Concord University), then her M.A. in curriculum and instruction from Virginia Tech. She taught special education and regular education in Richlands, VA and Beckley, WV. As a certified reading specialist in Montgomery County, she has enjoyed teaching at Christiansburg Primary and Falling Branch, and most recently at Auburn Middle and Auburn High Schools. Along with her reading classes at CES, Rhonda is also an instructor for an online class in reading at Virginia Tech.
Being "Nana" has brought unbelievable joy to her life-a gift from her daughter and husband. Rhonda's son attends Shepherd University. Her husband, Dennis, works in the coal industry. She is active in her church and the Gideon's organization.
Rhonda desires to be available to all her students' parents. Anytime there is a concern, please schedule an appointment to meet with her through the main office at 382-5172.

Rhonda grew up with parents who valued reading.
Here she is enjoying a 'reading moment' with her mom and sister.

She hopes her students, likewise, enjoy 'reading moments' seated next to a parent
or significant adult.
