GOAL
To increase student achievement in the four core areas for all students K-5 and the NCLB subgroups

Community Objectives
Increase communication and collaboration between CES and CPS.
Increase communication among and across grade levels.
Increase quality and frequency of communication with parents.
Increase teacher awareness of cultural differences that impact student achievement and parental participation.

Schedule joint faculty meetings once per month including time to talk, plan, address curriculum issues together.
Plan joint PTA projects and meetings.

To increase communication among and across grade levels, we will:
Develop structures to address identified needs including grade level, vertical and team meetings

To increase quality and frequency of communication with parents, we will:
Develop a plan to address identified needs via existing school improvement framework and PTA.
Identified needs include:
Providing regular information to parents regarding student achievement
Utilizing parents as resources.
Providing specific outreach to parents from NCLB subgroups.
Enhancing school community relationships.

Detailed record of activities taking place both in classrooms and schoolwide (target subgroups)

To increase teacher awareness of cultural differences that impact student achievement and parental participation, we will:
Take teachers on a community tour by bus.
Participate in Diversity Forum and create a satellite diversity forum for CES/CPS
Study Ruby Payne’s Framework for Understanding Poverty and implement instructional strategies.
Investigate strategies to increase achievement among African American students.

Record of classroom practices and instructional strategies implemented in classrooms at CPS and CES.
Increased achievement for students in NCLB subgroups.
Reading Objectives
Increase the Spring 2005, 2006, 2007 SOL English RLR pass rate of students in grades 3 and 5 and NCLB subgroups to 75%
Increase the number of students meeting PALS grade level benchmarks K-3 by 10% from Fall to Spring.
To increase reading achievement, we will:
Uniformly and consistently use HM curriculum and materials
Curriculum alignment with PALS
Implement vertical, grade level and team meetings to
Align instruction with the 2003 Reading/Literature SOL Curriculum
Develop pacing documents K-5
Develop K-5 student reading assessment portfolio
To increase reading achievement, we will:
Determine remediation targets
Implement before and after school remediation program
Offer summer school program
Provide Staff Development as needed on:
Guided reading, running records, flexible grouping, etc.
Success maker
Administer STAR 2-5
Develop and establish parent/teacher communication about reading performance.

Mathematics Objective
Increase the Spring 2005, 2006, 2007 Math SOL pass rate of students in grades 3 and 5 and the
NCLB subgroups to 70%.
To increase math achievement we will:
Target instruction in class and areas of remediation.
Ensure one hour math instruction even on early release days
Use uniform pacing of EM
Use appropriate math vocabulary from SOL and EM
Create unit benchmarks
To increase math achievement, we will:
Evaluate computer software to find appropriate mathematical software to target areas of need.
Use EM extensions, reteaching strategies, games, calculators and manipulatives appropriately
Create walkabout checklist
Use practice SOL materials and SOL released tests to teach test taking strategies.

Social Studies

NCLB subgroups to 70%.
To increase Social Studies achievement, we will:
Align curriculum with Social Studies Standards of Learning (follow Curriculum Framework)
Develop benchmarks and pacing guides by grade level.
Use nonfiction via trade books and primary source materials.
Design tests in SOL format
Use SOL released items
Administer Pre and Post tests and Chapter and Unit Tests

Science Objective
Increase the Spring 2005, 2006, 2007 Science SOL pass rate of students in grades 3 and 5 and the
NCLB subgroups to 80% with annual incremental increases of 3%.
To increase Science achievement, we will:
