Montgomery County Public Schools is committed to an educational program that recognizes individual student needs and adheres to an inclusive classroom model where students with mixed abilities are present. There will always be a small percentage of our student population who will distinguish themselves in their approach to learning. This population of students are those whose abilities and potential for accomplishment are so outstanding that they require special programs to meet their educational needs.

The gifted staff of Montgomery County Public Schools is committed to creating avenues for this special population to become active learners who are challenged daily. The staff encourages and works closely with teachers, administrators, and students to employ appropriate differentiation strategies.

Academically gifted students will be identified from all ethnic, geographic and socioeconomic populations through the use of multiple criteria. Montgomery County Public Schools presently identifies gifted learners K-12 in the areas of math and language arts. In addition, students in grades K-3 showing gifted potential can be placed in a talent pool for later review for formal gifted identification.

The long-range goal in gifted education for Montgomery County Public Schools is to enable gifted students to become independent, self-directed learners who use their knowledge and understanding to build rich and productive lives.
