family group graphicServices Available

A variety of services are available to parents. We also try to keep current on what is available for families in the community so we are a good place to ask for whatever you need. We will try to match you up with appropriate agencies if we can't help you ourselves. As with all services provided by the school system, there are no fees for our help.

Individualized Help with Your Child's IEP--we can help you plan for your child's IEP and also help you with any questions you may have about the special education process. We also have volunteers who have been trained as IEP Mentors to assist you, especially if you are new to the whole world of special education. If you would like to volunteer to become an IEP Mentor, let us know and we will notify you when there is a training.

Lending Library Materials--take a look at the variety of materials that we have available for you to borrow. Feel free to come by the office and browse our collection!

Tadpoles Group--this is a support group for families who have very young children with special needs. We have met at the park in Blacksburg when it was warm, and currently are meeting in the Blacksburg Public Library's story time room. If you are interested in attending please contact us. Everyone is welcome!

Biomedical Interventions Group--this group meets every two weeks to share information about a variety of therapies and diets. All interested persons are invited to join them. Meetings are held at the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Blacksburg. See the PRC Calendar for meeting details.

Newsletters (Current and Archived)--you should have received a newsletter by regular mail if your child has an IEP. If not, here are the last three that were sent out.

Email us to get on our Email List Serv's--we maintain several different lists, according to your interests. Currently we have an Autism Spectrum list, a general Special Education list, and a Preschoolers/Young Children list. Contact us if you would like to be added to the list(s). You can easily get off and we will NEVER give your address to anyone else. We try to keep you up to date on what's going on in the state and locally, and inform you about things that we think will interest you.

Referral to Community Agencies--we try to keep informed about what services are available from community agencies to help families of kids with IEPs. This includes summer programs, tutoring possibilities, support groups, etc.

Information on Specific Disabilities--we have a terrific lending library with books. Also, check out the links page for information online on specific disabilities.

Assistance with Medicaid Waiver Applications--we offer workshops every so often as part of the Waivers Mentors program that takes place across the state. We receive training directly from the Department of Medical Assistance Services (DMAS), which is the state agency that administers the waivers program in Virginia. Our goal is to get the word out to families about these wonderful supports that are offered to individuals with more challenging disabilities and to help them in the application process.

Tutor List--we offer a list of professionals that work for Montgomery County Public Schools who are interested in tutoring students. Contact us for the current list.

Information on Local, State, and National Workshops and Conferences--we receive information about many different workshops on a variety of topics in our office. If you would be interested in what's available either locally or elsewhere, please let us know.
