5TH GRADE
I have been a teacher at ELES since August, 1991. I have taught both 4th and 5th grades. Before coming to ELES, I taught Middle School math and science (5 years) and 5th grade (1 year) in South Carolina. I went to school at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, where I majored in Biology. I then decided to go back to school to become a teacher. My favorite subjects are Math and Science, and I am really glad that those are the subjects I get to teach in 5th grade!
My name is Betty Powell and I have been a fifth grade teacher at ELES for six years. I started my teaching career in 1976, a time when it was unimaginable that computers would someday be in every classroom! Now I have a wall lined with them! My teaching career was interrupted, happily, by time spent at home raising my son and daughter, going to Little League games, ballet, BMX races, and Girl Scouts. Those days are gone, but I cannot say that life is any less busy, especially now that I am preparing ten-year olds for SOL tests and sixth grade. Time seems to fly when one is having fun, and I can honestly day that's the way fifth grade seems right now.
