CHEMISTRY I
Credit: 1
Grade Level: 10-12
Prerequisite: Algebra II (previously completed or currently taking)
Standards of Learning Test required
This course involves a study of the concepts of chemistry that are central to an understanding of the physical and chemical properties of matter. Topics include atomic structure, bonding, the Periodic Table, chemical composition, chemical equations, and the properties of acids, bases, and salts. Laboratory work is designed to illustrate the basic laws of chemistry.
Note: Highly recommended for students planning to go to college.
PHYSICS
Credit: 1
Grade Level: 11-12
Prerequisite: Advance Algebra/Trig
AP Physics may be taught concurrently with regular physics. If offered, it will be a weighted credit, require the AP exam in May and include the Standard AP exam fee.
The main ideas within the field of physics are covered, such as: Newtonian Mechanics (object motion), thermodynamics (heat transfer), electricity and magnetism, waves, optics and non-Newtonian phenomena. The application of major concepts in each field to practical problems is demonstrated. Prerequisites include the ability to perform basic algebraic operations, to graph and compute, to manipulate trigonometric functions, especially sine, cosine, and tangent, to use and access library resources, and to use reference materials.
Note: Highly recommended for students planning to go to college.
