Advanced Placement English Language and Composition is a fully academic college level writing course that has a substantial emphasis on the reading and analysis of literature, both traditional and contemporary. In addition, the student will learn to identify, with an emphasis on non-fiction , the prevalent themes and characterizations present in American literature. Students in this course work to attain a high level of competence in reading, interpreting, analyzing and synthesizing information. Students earning a grade of “C” or better are required to take a nationally administered test in the spring for possible college credit.

The focus for eleventh grade English is American literature and writing. Readings for the class will include literature from the Native American era to the present. Writing will include persuasive and informational pieces, including literary critiques. Other topics covered in English 11 include college exploration, career choice, critical thinking and public speaking.
