Prerequisite: Satisfactory achievement in English 11
This class is designed to give students the skills necessary to perform successfully in a college setting. A major focus is on writing. Students will be engaged in writing activities throughout the course to strengthen writing skills. A research paper will be written. The literary focus is on British literature, although students are encouraged to broaden their literary scope by reading all types of literature. Journal writing may be employed to emphasize connections between literature and life.

AP English Literature & Composition engages students in the careful reading and critical analysis of imaginative literature. Through the close reading of selected texts, students should deepen their understanding of the ways writers use language to provide both meaning and pleasure for their readers. They will consider a work’s structure, style, and themes as well as elements such as figurative language, imagery, symbolism, and tone. This course includes intensive study of representative works from various genres and periods concentrating on works of recognized literary merit, ranging from the sixteenth to the twentieth century. Writing is also an integral part of the AP English Literature & Composition course for the AP exam is weighted toward student writing about the literature studied in the course. Writing assignments will focus on the critical analysis of literature and will include expository, analytical, and argumentative essays.

This course is designed to allow students who are academically advanced to enroll in a college course during their senior year in high school. Students will follow the course guide and will use the texts of New River Community College for English 111 and 112. The course will be taught at the Eastern Montgomery High School Distance Learning Lab. Students must pay their own tuition. Those students who successfully complete the course will receive dual credit through Eastern Montgomery High School and New River Community College.
