APPALACHIAN STUDIES

Appalachian Studies IS REQUIRED for ninth grade students who fail to pass the reading portion of the eighth grade SOL test.
Appalachian studies is designed to help students develop reading strategies so that they can be successful in all classes. Students will study both fiction and nonfiction literature of Appalachia . They will also have assess to computer programs designed to help them practice the reading strategies they are learning in class.
ENGLISH 9

English nine students present and critique dramatic readings of literary selections and continue to develop proficiency in making planned and oral presentations. Knowledge of literary terms and forms will be applied in the student’s own writing and in the analysis of literature. Writing will encompass narrative, literary, expository, and technical forms, with particular attention to analysis.

Prerequisite: Display excellence in previous English class and/or teacher recommendation
English 9 Honors is designed as a feeder class for students planning to take AP English or Dual Enrollment English beginning in their junior year.
