This course is a survey of United States and Virginia history including a basic study of the development of political, economic, and social patterns. Important events and personalities, both past and present, are presented in relationship to the development and growth of the nation and its influence in world affairs. This survey course stresses such skills as identifying cause and effect relationships; using and interpreting maps, charts, graphs, and other data; distinguishing and understanding events as part of a chronological sequence; and locating and using reliable sources of information.

AP United States History, the most challenging eleventh grade social studies course, is designed for academically oriented students who have demonstrated exceptional performance in social studies. This course is organized to be a survey of American history from the Colonial period to the present. Emphasis is placed on particular historical themes such as the American Revolution, the Jacksonian Period, Civil War, Reconstruction, Populist-Progressive era, World War I, Depression and the New Deal, World War II, and post World War II domestic and foreign policy. Students earning a grade of “C” or better are required to take a nationally administered test in the spring.
The average AP exam fee is $82 and payment is required at the beginning of the class.
