WORLD HISTORY and GEOGRAPHY I (To 1500 AD)

Students will develop a solid foundation in physical geography, developing analytical skills in interpreting maps, photographs, graphs, charts and other primary sources. Study of the earth’s dynamic processes, as well as its physical characteristics and natural resources, is emphasized.
Building on a knowledge of physical geography, students learn to investigate important phases within human history, beginning with the paleolithic and neolithic eras and continuing chronologically through to the beginning of modern times. At each of the stages, the role of geography in influencing historical trends will continually be reinforced.

The same basic curriculum covered in WHG I, is taught in WHG I Honors. The principle difference between World History and Geography I and World History and Geography I Honors is that students in honors will be expected to develop research and bibliography skills. In addition, students will be required to complete a research project and paper.

WORLD HISTORY AND GEOGRAPHY II (1500 AD to Present)

Students continue study of major civilizations of the world beginning with European voyages of exploration and continuing chronologically. Students will focus more on examination of economic and political geography than on physical geography. European civilization and its important historical themes are emphasized because of its role in exploring, capturing, and colonizing all of the other regions of the earth.
Themes include European exploration and expansion, the role of science and technology in establishing dominance, the emergence of nation-states, the appearance of democracy, and the emergence of an industrial revolution. The course concludes with consideration of the major historical themes of the 20th century.

ADVANCED PLACEMENT EUROPEAN HISTORY

Prerequisite: World History and Geography I

This course is a college level course in European history offered to high school students. The pace and difficulty exceed what is usually encountered in a survey course. It is offered to students who desire the experience of a challenging course, and covers the history of Europe from the Renaissance to the present. The geographic, political, economic, social, cultural and military factors that created modern Europe are examined in depth. Students will develop critical thinking skills through analysis and interpretation of primary and secondary sources. Research and writing skills will be emphasized, as will proper technique for mastery of document-based questions. In the end, the course is designed to prepare the student for the comprehensive national exam. Students earning a grade of “C” or better are required to take this test, with the potential of earning early college credits.
The average fee for an AP exam is $82 and must be paid at the beginning of the semester.
