Purpose
Research confirms that family involvement has a direct positive affect on student achievement yet training on the subject is limited at best in most teacher training programs. New teacher s approach parent communication with trepidation and experienced teacher often get into a rut. Students are often left out loop all together. The purpose of this project is to stimulate thought and conversation around the topic of Parent-Teacher-Student Communication.
Procedure
The materials below can be use for a half-day professional development training with new and experienced teachers. The Power Point Presentation concentrates on the Parent/Teacher/Student Conference. It examines three time periods: (1) pre-conference planning, (2) the conference itself, and (3) post-conference follow-up. Within each of the time periods four areas are considered, Resources, Limitations and Barriers, Issues, and Specific Procedures. Worksheets for future use and for group activities are provided. An script of the workshop is provided.

Personal Reflection
I was asked to participate in the training for new teachers on the subject of Parent - Teacher Communication. Originally I was asked to participate as a parent because I have four children and have had many opportunities to sit on the parent side of the conference table. I have dealt with the guilt and pain that every parent has experienced when things are not going well for his/her child. I have felt the pride and joy that comes with success. Eventually I took a larger role in the workshop. As a Coordinator for the alternative school, I have a great deal of contact with parents. I believe that too often we leave the parent out of the classroom and the student out of the conference. I realized when I developed this workshop that I too had fallen into a rut in my communication patterns. I worked with my staff to redesign our conference format putting more emphasis on the pre-conference preparation. I hope that every parent and student that leaves a conference at our school leaves with a better insight into themselves, a plan when there has been failure, and a sense of pride in accomplishments.

Purpose
The purpose of the following materials is to provide an additional resource to math teachers working with students that may have already been through the material several times in the traditional manner.
Procedure
The following presentation programs were created in Corel Presentation 10. The files are available for download if you have the program. They will run on the internet. The slide shows may be used in the following ways:

Personal Reflection
As a math teacher of at-risk students I was always looking for ways to engage students that had been turned off to math for many years. In my classroom I had a large TV which could be used as a computer monitor. I could teach the whole class with one computer. I put a 25 ft cord on my mouse and would pass it around for students to control and even highlight on the screen. Students that did not "get it" but were too embarrassed to reveal themselves to the class could go over the slide shows privately as often as they wanted. In terms of classroom management, putting problems on a presentation program allows little or no down time when the teacher is not focused on the class. Students also are more motivated to keep pace with the slides. Attendance is also an issue with at-risk students. I never had any trouble getting one student to tutor another who had been absent. The students enjoyed the opportunity to teach and show off their expertise. Before this course, I had not used PowerPoint slide shows from the internet. Not only can I now make them available for other teachers and students, but I have found many other excellent shows already on the internet. I am excited about assisting other teachers on our staff and students in our school to produce and publish their own resources.

Purpose
The purpose of this project is to develop a starting place, a framework, for a year long pursuit to help students "think about thinking."
The goal of this lesson is to introduce students to the idea that there is some rhyme and reason to thinking and questioning. Bloom's Taxonomy is used as a frame of reference because the material is readily available, universally accepted, and easy to illustrate. Student will embark on a very structured inquiry into Bloom's Taxonomy and how it can be applied to questioning. The resource manual created as a product of this lesson should be used as a starting point for future discussions, activities and lessons.

Personal Reflection
This was the first WebQuest I have ever produced. As the Coordinator at our school, I had put together a list of WebQuests that teachers might use and had put the list in the teachers' handbook. This was honestly the closest I had come to integrating WebQuests into the curriculum. I had previously taught the unit for which I wrote the WebQuest. The resource manual that the students produced was a valuable tool for the rest of the course. However, the process by which it was produced, whole class fashion, step-by-step, was very unsatisfactory. Students at varying levels of thinking and understand need to be able to work at different levels of understanding and at their own pace, or the goal of metacognition is defeated. Having used the WebQuest with students with very different performance levels, I am very excited about the results and hope to create a follow-up WebQuest in which small groups of students will create their own short lesson for their peers by selecting a current event or human interest story, writing questions on all levels of thinking, exchanging lessons with the peer groups, and evaluating other groups answers.
