Pre-School
  Anne Kuykendall: Pre-School Teacher akuy@mcps.org
I have taught for over 21 years.  I spent 3 years at Price’s Fork, teaching kindergarten, 1st grade and 2nd grade.  I have taught kindergarten and Grade 1 at GLE for 18 years. I have a Bachelor of Science degree from James Madison University, graduate course work and early childhood education certification from Radford University. My hometown is Vienna, Virginia.

Kindergarten

I have been teaching kindergarten for over 14 years now.  I have only taught at GLE.  I grew up in Lebanon, Virginia.  I hold a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education and a Master’s degree in reading.

I am a recent graduate of Radford University. I majored in Elementary Education with a concentration in English and Special Education. I’m originally from Christiansburg so the Blacksburg area is very familiar. I’m looking forward to working with the faculty, staff, students, and parents here at GLE.

First Grade
  Francine Helms: First Grade Teacher nhelms@mcps.org
I have taught for more than 15 years.  Most of my experience has been in Kindergarten and first grade.  My Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education is from Virginia Tech.  I am pursuing a Master in Reading from Radford University which should be completed in 2008.

Teaching first grade at Gilbert Linkous is a pleasure.  The children grow and change so quickly.  They make such "learning leaps" and share their enthusiasm each day. There is never a slow day or a boring moment in first grade.  I am fortunate to have a job where I learn something new every day.

Joy Sullivan White: First Grade Teacher jswhite@mcps.org
My hometown is South River, New Jersey. I have taught K-6th for more than 28 years. At GLE I have taught for over 16 years.  I have been a reading specialist for 3 years.  I have a Bachelor’s degree in English and Elementary Education certification in K-7th from Cedar Crest College, Allentown, PA, and graduate work in reading at Virginia Tech.


Second Grade 
  Minnie Brewbaker: Second Grade Teacher mbrewbak@mcps.org
I have been teaching at Gilbert Linkous for more than 25 years.  More than 15 of those years have been in second grade.  I received my Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education from James Madison University.  I have a Masters of Education in Instruction from the University of Virginia.

I have taught in Montgomery County over 35 years and at Gilbert Linkous over 30 years. I have a Bachelor of Science degree in Early Childhood Education from Radford College. I spent my first 5 years at Price's Fork Elementary teaching 5th, 6th,and 7th grade Science, 2nd grade, and Kindergarten.

Third Grade

I taught 4th grade for two years, one at Belview Elementary and the other at GLE.  I was born in London, England and have an MS degree in microbiology (North Carolina State University) and an MaEd degree (Virginia Tech).  Both my children, now in secondary school, attended GLE.

I am originally from Ann Arbor, Michigan, but I love it in the New River Valley!  I hold a Bachelor of Science degree in Public Relations at Western Michigan University and graduated from Radford University with my teaching license.

My name is Carolyn Croy Thomas.  I taught 2nd grade in Roanoke City at Highland Park Learning Center and Magnet School for three years (1990-1993). I have taught the third grade at Gilbert Linkous Elementary since 1993.  I am from Blacksburg, Virginia. 

Fourth Grade
  Kelly Pleasant: Fourth Grade Teacher kpleasant@mcps.org

I grew up in the Tidewater area of the state.  I have been teaching 4th grade at GLE for over 6 years.  I graduated from Virginia Tech in 1984 and returned to Radford University in 1997 to become certified to teach.   I love teaching 4th grade because the kids are at a perfect age and the curriculum is exciting.


 

Irene Lemasters: Fourth Grade Teacher ilemaste@mcps.org

Although I am the newest member of the GLE faculty, I have been an educator for over 12 years. Teaching fourth grade is an exciting and rewarding experience. I received a BS from Virginia Tech in 1994 in Early Childhood Education, and I'm currently pursuing a Master's in Reading from Radford Universtiy.  I hail from the "Hoosier" state of Indiana.

I have been teaching at GLE since September of 1994.  I have taught 1st, 3rd, and 4th grades at GLE.  I have a BA in education with a minor in psychology.  I am currently working on my masters at Virginia Tech and will graduate in spring 2008.

Fifth Grade
Heidi Harper: Fifth Grade Teacher hharper@mcps.org
I have been teaching for over 26 years.  The first fifteen years I taught learning disabled children in both a resource room and a self-contained classroom at Christiansburg High School and at GLE.  The opportunity came up to move to a regular classroom and here I’ve been in fifth grade since that time.  My hometown is Pittsburg, PA. I have a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary Ed/Special education with endorsements in learning disabilities, social maladjustments, and emotional disturbances from Slippery Rock State College and a Master of Science in reading from Radford University.

Leah White: Fifth Grade Teacher lwhite@mcps.org

Hello!  I began teaching at GLE following the completion of my Master's Degree in Curriculum and instruction from Virginia Tech.  Since graduation, I have submerged myself in the lifestyle of a GLE teacher.  Working with the Linkous Lads and Ladies Mentor programs and other various after school programs have proven to be fulfilling and worthwhile experiences.  At the end of the day I am proud to say I am an educator, but most importantly a teacher at Gilbert Linkous Elementary School.

My name is Heidi Williams.  I am certified to teach Kindergarten through eighth grade.  I taught at Elliston Lafayette Elementary for 8 years before coming to Gilbert Linkous Elementary.  I have taught second, third and fifth grades.

  Tacey Apisa: K-12 ESL Teacher tapisa@mcps.org
I am the ESL teacher for GLE, CPS, and CMS. I have my undergraduate degree from Virginia Tech and my Master's from George Mason University. I have now been at GLE for over 5 years! Before moving to Blacksburg I worked in East Africa for three years, and then returned to the U.S. and taught in Fairfax County for 2 years. Now we are settled here in the beautiful New River Valley!

I have been teaching for approximately 20 years. My hometown is Elkhart, IN.  I have a Bachelor of Music degree from St. Mary's College in Notre Dame, IN and a Master's degree of teaching from Indiana University. I hold a Level III Schulwerk Certificate of music education.

I have worked in education for over 30 years.  Currently, I am working part time at GLE in the special education department.  I have taught Kindergarten, 1st grade, 3rd grade, and both high school and elementary special education.  I grew up in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.  My Bachelor of Science Degree is from the University of Tennessee and my Master of Arts in special education is from the University of New Mexico.  I have worked in Tennessee, Washington, D.C., New Mexico, Arkansas, Guam, and in Virginia for over 23 years.  My hobbies are international travel in developing countries, home improvement activities, and reading.

I started teaching grade 4 in 1976 at GLE.  Later I taught about 10 years in third grade.  I started as library media specialist at GLE in 2002.   I have a Bachelor's of Science degree in elementary education from Ohio University, a Master’s degree in elementary administration from Radford University, and a Virginia library media specialist license from Radford University.

Susan Huff: K-5 Physical Education shuff@mcps.org
My first teaching assignment was at Blacksburg Middle School in 1981.  I began teaching elementary PE (grades K-5) at GLE in 1986. I have a Bachelor of Science degree in Health and Physical Education in K-12.  Two of the programs I coordinate are our introductory bowling lessons, culminating in a day of bowling at the NRV Superbowl, and GLE's annual Field Day activities every May.

  Patricia Klaers: School Nurse pklaers@mcps.org

Having been a Registered Nurse for 36 years has afforded me the opportunity of working in many areas of medicine. I’ve worked in Public Health, Respiratory/ Allergies, Orthopedics, Hospital Medical-Surgical Nursing, Hospice/Home Health, Obstetrics/Gynecology/Midwifery, and now School Nursing. I have the added privilege of knowing several Kindergarten students from their prenatal days, including having delivered a few of them!  I love having my summers free for travel and volunteer work.


  Brooke Lawson: Reading Specialist blawson@mcsp.orgI work as the Reading Specialist at GLE.  Prior to working at CLE I taught second grade for three years at Riverlawn Elementary in Pulaski County, Virginia.  I have an undergraduate degree in Elementary Education grades K-5, and a Master's degree in Reading grades K-12.
  Diane Naff: Gifted Coordinator dnaff@mcps.org
I have been teaching for 29 years and have been part of the gifted staff and Gilbert Linkous Elementary for the past 10 years. I have a Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education and a minor in Psychology from James Madison University, a Master of Arts degree from Virginia Tech, a Technology Certificate from the University of Virginia and an endorsement in gifted education from Radford University. I've been to college all across Virginia and I still love learning new things.  Away from school, I enjoy reading, computers, clogging, making scrapbooks, swimming, riding my bike, going to the movies, and cheering for the Hokies. I enjoy working with the students, teachers and parents here at Gilbert Linkous.  My goals are to challenge my students, stretch their thinking, teach them how to set their own goals, and guide them
to take responsibility for their own learning.

I received my B.S. degree in psychology and an M.S. degree in education from Radford University.  I have over 10 years experience teaching special education.

My hometown is Newport News, Virginia. I have degrees of Bachelor of Science and Master of Arts from Virginia Tech, and certificates of arts and elementary education.  I have taught over 17 years of arts.

I've been at GLE over 5 years. My hometown is Wading River, N.Y. I have a Master’s degree in Communication Science and Disorders, Certificate of Clinical Competence from the American Speech-Language-Hearing-Association, VA Teaching Certificate from speech-language disorders.
