Gilbert Linkous Elementary School is located in
Blacksburg,
Virginia,
on a plateau between the Blue Ridge and Allegheny mountains. The surrounding
region is known locally as the New River Valley, after the New River which
passes nearby on its way westward (!) across the Appalachian mountains
to the Mississippi River. The Eastern Continental Divide passes through
Blacksburg, so that the western part of town is drained westward to the
New River and eventually the Gulf of Mexico while the eastern part of town
is drained by the Roanoke River to the Atlantic. This area of great natural
beauty is ideal for outdoor recreational activities such as hiking and
canoeing in the warm months and skiing in the winter. The
Appalachian
Trail is a short driving distance away. |
