Organization:
The fourth grade at Margaret Beeks Elementary consists of three classes. Each class has about about 23 students. The teachers are April Danzi, Clare Law, Paula Snair, and Patti Williams.
Curriculum:
In the fourth grade, we change classes for many of our subject areas. Being exposed to several different teachers helps students prepare for middle school schedules. In the fourth grade students try to improve their personal responsibility and self-reliance.
 
 
Math
The Everyday Mathematics programs is being used to teach the needed math skills. In math, the students will compute decimals, fractions, measurement in Customary and Metric Units, Geometry, and Probability and Statistics by using methods such as calculators, paper and pencil, mental computation, and estimation. We focus on larger number adding, subtracting, multiplying, and division.
 
Social Studies
The Fourth Grade social studies program is Virginia History from 1607 - 1823. This time period focuses on the Colonial times from Jamestown through the French and Indian War. We also teach Virginia's role in the Revolutionary War through the birth of a New Nation. The children learn about great historical Virginia figures such as George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Patrick Henry, and James Monroe.
 
Science
The Fourth Grade Science Curriculum consists of a study of many topics through reasoning and logic. They will learn about Force, Motion and Energy emphasizing the use of electricity. We teach about plants and their life process and anatomy. The children learn about advanced weather concepts such as air pressure, fronts, and storm formation with the use of weather tools like barometers, rain gauges, and anemometers. The children will also learn about the relationships between the Earth, Moon and Sun.
 
Colonial Day
The fourth graders will celebrate their study of Virginia's History with a "Colonial Day" celebration. The children are encouraged to come to school dressed in the clothing of the period - three cornered hats, knickers, long dresses, etc. During the day, the students will attend "Blab School", hear Jack Tales and play Colonial Games, have a Colonial Feast and dance the Virginia Reel. Local craftspeople will demonstrate weaving, rugbraidig, basket making, quilting, and other Colonial Crafts.
