Fifth Grade
Margaret Beeks
Elementary

Teachers: Megan Fogarty, Allison Kruckow, and
Monica Martin
- Language Arts:
- Students are provided differentiated
reading instruction which is integrated when possible with content
curriculum and daily language use. Written language is emphasized
daily across the curriculum.
- Math:
- Students will work on basic addition,
subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, and
problem solving using the Everyday Mathematics Program and some
supplemental materials.
- Social Studies:
- Students will study Virginia's role in
modern history beginning with the Civil War and progressing
through Virginia's current events. Skills such as map and chart
reading, discussion, debate, and analysis are also stressed.
- Science:
- The students will study a mixture of
physical and biological topics including sound, light, color,
matter, basic chemistry, cells and their characteristics, the
ocean environment, geology, and survival skills. Scientific
process skills, logic, and reasoning are also stressed through
experimentation.
- Field
Trips:
- The fifth grade traditionally goes on a one day trip to historical sights
in Virginia relative to Virginia history and the Civil War. Fifth grade also
participates in a trip to Dixie Caverns which coordinates with our studies
of Earth. We also try to attend a music presentation at the middle school to
help the 5th graders begin to think about their elective possibilities for
their course work in 6th grade.
Special End of Year Activities:
Our fifth graders enjoy several special activities at the
end of the school year. We go bowling, visit the middle school for their first
orientation, and we have a special promotion ceremony the evening before the
last day of school. We also provide a wonderful talent show to entertain our
school community the last day of school.
