Who
are they?Elementary school counselors are Masters-level specialists in counseling, with specific skills in working with children, ages five through 11. Each of the thirteen elementary schools in Montgomery County employs a full-time counselor.
What
do they do?Unlike secondary school counselors, elementary school counselors aren't hampered by administrative or clerical duties, and spend their time counseling with children and their parents. Counselors also consult with teachers and principals.
How
do they do it?Elementary school counselors are governed by a state mandate specifying that a majority of the work day be spent in actual counseling, the remainder of the work day be spent in the areas of classroom guidance, consulting, and coordinating services.
What
does that mean?
WOW!
What else?In addition to all of that, elementary counselors develop and oversee programs and activities that enhance students' school experiences, and highlight students' strengths.
