The Virginia Preschool Initiative at Margaret Beeks Elementary is a Family-Focused Preschool Program for 4 year olds who are considered to be "at-risk". The preschool team consists of a full time Teacher and Instructional Assistant, 16 children and their families. The team works together to provide a high quality developmental preschool experience which :

• encourages each child's curiosity and eagerness to learn.
• creates opportunities to learn sharing and improve social skills.
• assists in developing the skills needed for kindergarten success.
• help parents and children become familiar with the school environment and expectations.

Families are encouraged to share concerns and to participate as members of the preschool team. Parents are also encouraged to help their child develop the skills necessary for school success through the support provided at Parent/Teacher Conferences and Parent Meetings. Teachers and Family Support Specialists serve as a source of information on child development, parenting skills and behavioral concerns. The Family Support Specialist is able to provide information and assistance to parents regarding community resources, educational opportunities, career training and other available services.

The Preschool Curriculum is child-centered, revolving around thematic units which last from one week to a month. Activities, at a variety of developmental levels are integrated into the curriculum to promote Language, Social Skills, Reading and Math Readiness, Independence, and Physical Development.
