Title 1 Reading Program

and Reading Recovery

Margaret Beeks is very fortunate to have supplemental reading intervention programs. These reading resources include Reading Recovery, Title 1, and an Early Literacy Program for kindergarten.  These reading programs concentrate on students in the early grades of kindergarten, first, second, and third. The goal is to provide supplemental instruction in reading with the hope of preventing reading difficulties and enriching classroom instruction. All selected students receive individualized and /or small group instruction from highly qualified reading specialists.

Kindergarten's Early Literacy Title 1 teacher is Mrs. Sheridan. Mrs. Sheridan and Pam Easterling, an Early Liteacy Aide, teach the kindergarten students selected to participate in the program.

The 1st grade reading specialists are Judy Witherspoon and Judi McBride.  The programs in 1st grade consist of Reading Recovery and Literacy Groups.  Reading Recovery is an early intervention program designed for students who could benefit from an individualized reading program.  First grade Literacy Groups provide small group instruction in the areas of reading and writing.

Selection of students is based not only on the Phonological Awareness Literacy Screening (PALS) assessment, but also teacher recommendations and other types of informal assessments.  The PALS assessment is administered to all K-3 students at the beginning of the school year. The Second and Third Grade Reading Specialist for Title I students is Susan Sheridan.
