The Grants Office is now involved in developing all types of MCPS grant proposals. Between 1995 and June 2007, the district has participated in the submission of 514 separate competitive grant proposals, of which 294 (57%) received funding totaling $17,450,184. Of that amount, $5,909,749 was for projects involving technology, and $4,817,685 was for projects involving math. The remaining $6,722,750 funded a variety of projects in the following categories: Student Services Programs: $2,047,228 Career and Technical Education: $309,647 Fine Arts: $57,944 Health and Physical Education: $588,017 Language Arts: $364,610 Science: $923,749 Service Learning: $157,495 Social Studies: $1,066,616 Special Education/Gifted: $184,366 Staff Development: $493,997 Comprehensive School Reform: $529,081 Laura Williams has been MCPS Grant Writer since 1997. She has experience securing grants from both government and private funding sources. Before taking her current position, Ms. Williams served for ten years as an Elementary Reading Specialist in Montgomery County Schools. She holds a B.A. in Communications Studies and an M.A. in Education from Virginia Tech. She brings her research and writing skills to the office, along with a familiarity with the atmosphere and demands of working in the classroom.
