Montgomery County Public School Students Scored Above the State and National Mean on the 2007 Scholastic Aptitude Test

In 2007, Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) scores increased overall across the Montgomery County school division.  MCPS SAT scores also exceeded the state and national mean.  The school division has implemented various initiatives over the last two years to help students prepare for college in their high school course work.  In 2005, the Stanford 10 test given to students in specific grade levels, was removed to decrease the over testing of students.  The school division began offering the PSAT to tenth grade students instead to ensure that all students are prepared early for the SAT.  Other initiatives the district implemented were access for students to the Southwest Virginia Governor's School, which allows students to take advanced college level courses; an increase in the number of dual enrollment course offerings, virtual school, and distance learning courses; and expanded Advanced Placement (AP) courses offerings.  These initiatives have resulted in increases in SAT scores across the division.  While most students in Virginia take the SAT test, the division also scored above the state and national average on the ACT test for 2007.

"We are so proud of our students, staff, and parents for this accomplishment," stated Dr. Tiffany Anderson, Superintendent.  "This year, Montgomery County increased in the number of students taking AP courses and increased in the number of students participating in the Early College Scholars Program," she added.  Career and Technical Education offerings were also expanded.  Dr. Anderson shared that the district's goal is to ensure every student is prepared to enter the career or college of their choice when they graduate from Montgomery County Public Schools.
