Homelessness exists throughout Virginia; rural homelessness is generally hidden.  In southwest Virginia most families experiencing homelessness are doubled/tripled-up with family/friends because they have no where else to go.  Did you know that these families are considered homeless, even though they are not staying in a shelter? (Who is Homeless Issue Brief)

Project HOPE, NRV is one of Virginia's 18 homeless education programs funded by Project HOPE, Virginia.  Project HOPE, Virginia is a federally-funded grant, authorized by the McKinney-Vento Homeless Education Assistance Act, now part of NCLB.  Project HOPE ensures the enrollment, attendance, and success of children and youth experiencing homelessness throughout Virginia by offering subgrants to local school divisions.  Local Education Agencies (LEA) develop customized programs to meet the needs of homeless children and youth in their area.  Project HOPE funds activities throughout the school year including summer enrichment programs.  Activities include early childhood education, mentoring, tutoring, parent education, and domestic violence prevention programs.  In addition, emergency services, referrals for health services, transportation, school supplies, and costs related to obtaining school records may be provided through the local Homeless Education Program.  Please visit Project HOPE, Virginia's webpage for extensive publications and resources available to assist schools and communities as they provide educational services to families experiencing homelessness.  Contact information:  Patricia A.
