SCHOOLS

There are 5 school systems, 46 schools throughout the New River Valley.  Each school system has a designated Homeless Liaison; each school has a Homeless Contact.  For a complete list of contacts for the '04-'05 school year go to the following link: Regional Homeless Contacts.  All of these individuals work with Project HOPE, NRV to ensure the enrollment, attendance and success of all children and youth experiencing homelessness.

Common Questions & Answers

Q:    Who is homeless?

A:    Anyone who, due to a lack of housing, lives in a shelter, motel, vehicle, campground, on the street or doubled up with family/friends. (Who is Homeless Issue Brief)

Q:    Where can homeless children/youth attend school?

A:    Either the school in which the child/youth was last enrolled (school of origin), or the school in the attendance area where the child/youth is temporarily living.  (School Selection Issue Brief)

Q:    Can students experiencing homelessness be denied enrollment if the parent/guardian does not have proof of residence?

A:    No.  The parent/guardian may sign an affidavit stating that the family is staying in temporary accommodations. (Enrollment Issue Brief)

Q:  What if the homeless child/youth does not have the school records for a child experiencing homelessness?

A:    The child/youth must be enrolled immediately.  It is the responsibility of the schools to obtain necessary records.  (Enrollment Issue Brief)

Q:    Are school systems required to provide transportation to the "school of origin?"

A:    Yes.  Schools are required to provide transportation to and from a student's school of origin at a parent's request. (Transportation Issue Brief)
