Hokie Book Challenge

Dates: Sept. 28, 2009 through Jan. 22, 2010

Goals: For each student to read at least 5 books up to as many as 20 books

Book Reports:

· PreK, Kdg and 1^st grade - draw a picture of a scene from the book

· 2^nd through 5^th graders – write about the book on a graphic organizer

Students who read 5 books:

· Earn a FREE game ticket to “Hokie Book Challenge Night” with the Virginia Tech women’s basketball team on… (date to be determined)

· Receive a personal congratulations letter from Coaches Beamer, Dunkenberger, and Greenberg

Students who read 20 books:

· Get recognized at “Hokie Book Challenge Night” on court and on the video board during halftime.

· Be entered in a drawing at the game to win these select prizes:

o Autograph basketball by men’s team

o Autograph basketball by women’s team

o 2 FREE tickets to men’s basketball game

o 2 FREE tickets to a non-conference football game in 2010

Rewards for winning schools:

· Win a pizza party if your class is one of the top 5 classes in the county with students reading 5 or more books

· Receive a “Hokie Book Challenge” plaque to display and a FREE Hokie Bird appearance if your school reads the most books per student

Record Keeping:

· Submit students’ pictures/graphic organizers to Peggy who will tally individual and classroom results

Guided Reading Levels:

· Please be sure students select books from the lists that are on or near their guided reading level

· Guided Reading Level equivalents

J, K, L, M 2^nd Grade

L, M, N, O, P 3^rd Grade

Q, R, S 4^th Grade

T, U, V 5^th Grade

W, X, Y, Z 6^th Grade
