What is an idiom?
An idiom is a saying or phrase that cannot be understood by looking up the words in a dictionary. For example, if you "get someone's goat," it means that you are really bugging someone, not that you have taken away his goat.
Every language has idioms, and they can make it very difficult to translate from one language to another. The results are sometimes hilarious. If you saw a sign for "saliva chicken," would you realize that they might be trying to tell you that the chicken is "mouth-watering?" Do you have any examples to share?
