Winter weather presents many problems and you should know
that the safety of your children will always be my first priority. I thought it
might be helpful for you to have information to ensure that you know what to do
in case of inclement weather and how these decisions are made.
The school division has a school information line (382-5102) that gives information on school closings. There is also an E-Mail notification system that is available for you to subscribe to at:
http://www.mcps.org/delayclosing.html
For additional major area media sources that also carry information on our school system closings and delays visit:

The
decision to close schools is made based on the recommendation from transportation
officials. In making a recommendation,
the supervisor of transportation does the following:
· Contacts the National Weather Service
· Communicates with the local and state departments of transportation, the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, and towns of Christiansburg and Blacksburg police departments determining hazardous and unsafe road conditions
Additionally, MCPS staff travel and evaluate local road conditions and report back to the Transportation Department. Contacts are also made with surrounding school divisions to assess weather that may be heading in our direction.
