Katherine Lynde, English teacher at Blacksburg High School, was named MCPS Teacher of the Year. Lynde has worked for MCPS since 1997 in her current role.

Lynde believes that her dedication to lifelong learning shows students how to be the best learners. “I teach so I can learn, and I ignite students so they can learn,” said Lynde. Her renowned myths and legends project has captivated seniors for years as they investigate history, myth, and folktale in the local community.

“Katherine views the students and staff at BHS as a part of her family,” said Principal Brian Kitts. “We are proud to have her not just as our school’s teacher of the year, but as the district’s teacher of the year.”

Lynde was chosen from among all of the school level teachers of the year and will move on to the Regional Teacher of the Year competition.

Lynde has a bachelor’s and master’s degree in English, both obtained from Virginia Tech. She also has a master’s degree in educational leadership from Radford University.

The Teacher of the Year is selected at the end of one school year and serves as the Teacher of the Year for the following school year, in order to mirror the state process. Katherin Lynde is the MCPS Teacher of the Year for 2019-2020.
