Posted September 11, 2018 MCPS is preparing for potential flooding and power outages due to the effects of Hurricane Florence. All school facilities are getting ready for significant rainfall this weekend. All mechanical and electrical systems are also being evaluated to ensure that they are fully operational and will be safe in the event of a power surge. The transportation department is monitoring roads to determine road safety as the areas is planned to get rain throughout the week.  The school system is working proactively with National Weather Service, VDOT, County Emergency Management, Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department, Blacksburg Police Department, and Christiansburg Police Department.

MCPS sent a reminder to parents about severe weather procedures and notifications for school closure. Should MCPS need to close school, a severe weather message will be sent out. Parents, staff, and community members can sign up to receive alerts via phone or email online. The division will also update their website, twitter page, facebook page and Instagram if there is a need for school closure.

MCPS has added a new code to its severe weather codes – Code 5. A code 5 means that schools are closed and 12-month employees report two hours late. All other codes remain the same.
