National Board for Professional Teaching Standards

National Board Certification (NBC) is a demonstration of a candidate’s teaching practice as measured against rigorous standards.  It is a symbol of commitment to excellence in teaching.  Those achieving this certification have been assessed by their peers and found to be accomplished, making sound professional judgments about student learning, and acting effectively on those judgments.  The ultimate goal is to improve student learning.

Information on NBC can be found at

Information about NBC incentive awards for Virginia teachers (
$5,000 initial award; $2,500 each subsequent year the certificate is active, including years after certificate renewal) can be found on the VDOE website.

In addition to the incentives provided through the VDOE, MCPS awards NBC teachers a one-time salary step increase and will reimburse $1,000 of the certification cost for teachers who begin and successfully complete the certification process after being hired by MCPS.
