Emergency Communication

MCPS communicates with families and staff using all available communication methods in an emergency. 

For staff, this may include emails, phone calls, and overhead announcements.

For families, this may include emails, phone calls, and text messages. 

Inclement Weather Communication

MCPS communicates with families and staff when schools are closed or will dismiss early due to inclement weather.  

Community member can sign up to receive delay and closing announcements. More information on this system will be provided soon.

Severe Weather Codes

Code Red

Schools Closed and System Shut Down

Only essential personnel will need to report to work.

  • A Code Red will only be used if it is advised that individuals stay off roads (i.e., ice storms, heavy snow, etc.).

Code Orange

Schools Closed

Eleven (11) and twelve (12) month personnel will report on a regular schedule unless otherwise notified.

Work Expectations for 11- and 12-Month Staff:

  • Report to work on time as scheduled

  • If an employee anticipates a late arrival or needs to take the day off, they should promptly notify their immediate supervisor and submit a leave request if applicable.

  • Employees should work their regular schedule until the usual end time unless instructed otherwise by the school division.

Inclement Weather Assignments for students

  • School Buildings Closed to Students

  • Meal services are provided at select locations

  • Students in the Virtual School Program will follow the Virtual Virginia Academic Calendar and Inclement Weather Policy.

  • Teachers do not report unless required to attend scheduled PD and meetings.
