Students in Montgomery County Public Schools have outperformed the state in reading, math, science, and history, according to newly released state assessment data.

The 2025-26 results show 78% of MCPS students exceed state expectations in reading, compared with 74% statewide; 78% in math, compared with 73% statewide; 76% in science, compared with 71% statewide; and 79% in history, compared with 70% statewide.

Writing was the division’s largest year-over-year improvement, increasing from 66% in 2024-25 to 74% in 2025-26. Writing performance has increased 22% since 2023-24, when 52% of students met state expectations.

MCPS also saw improvement over the past year in reading, math, and history. Reading increased from 76% to 78%, math increased from 77% to 78%, and history increased from 75% to 79%. Science declined from 81% to 76%, but remained 5% above the state average.

“These results reflect the hard work of our students, teachers, staff, and families,” said Superintendent Dr. Kelly Guempel. “We are pleased to see improvement in several areas, particularly writing, and will use these results to identify where students need additional support and help guide our instructional priorities for the coming year.”
