Ten Montgomery County Public Schools have earned the state's Distinguished designation, the highest recognition under Virginia's School Performance and Support Framework.

All 19 MCPS schools are fully accredited, with 10 earning the state's Distinguished designation. Those schools include Auburn, Gilbert Linkous, Harding Avenue, Kipps, and Margaret Beeks elementary schools; Blacksburg Middle School; and Auburn, Blacksburg, Christiansburg, and Eastern Montgomery high schools.

MCPS schools also ranked among the top performers in Region 6, which includes 14 school divisions across southwestern Virginia.

Kipps Elementary School ranked first in the region for math mastery, followed by Harding Avenue Elementary School in second. Both schools also placed among the top five for reading mastery.

At the middle school level, Blacksburg Middle School ranked fourth in the region for its overall framework score and placed among the top five for reading, math, and science mastery. Shawsville Middle School was among the region's top five for gains in its overall framework score.

Blacksburg High School ranked first in the region for reading, math, and science mastery. Both Blacksburg and Auburn high schools also placed among the top five for six-year graduation readiness.

“One of the most encouraging things about these results is seeing our schools rank so highly in reading, math, and science,” said Superintendent Dr. Kelly Guempel. “These are important measures of what students are learning, and they help us see where our schools are doing well and where we can better support our students.”

The schools received the Distinguished designation through the Virginia Department of Education's School Performance and Support Framework. The framework measures student performance in several areas, with Distinguished representing its highest designation.
