The New River Valley community recently gathered to celebrate the spirit of volunteerism at the annual Leading Lights awards, where local students and residents were recognized for their exceptional contributions to the region. Among the highlights of the evening was the presentation of the Distinguished NRV Leading Lights awards, a prestigious honor reserved for those whose service has made a profound impact on the lives of others.

The event saw a significant achievement for Blacksburg High School, as students Rishi Nair and Ian Yu were the only two high schoolers in the entire region to receive the Distinguished Leading Lights award this year. Their recognition underscores the vital role that young people play in strengthening the community through dedicated service and leadership. The awards ceremony also celebrated excellence in community-wide service, honoring individuals like Dusty Spence, the nominee for the City of Radford, who has spent years supporting the region through extensive volunteer work.

Dusty Spence’s commitment to the community is well-known throughout the valley. A recipient of the LifeChanger of the Year award, she has been a tireless advocate for students and neighbors alike. At Blacksburg High School, she manages a clothing closet that provides essential items, hygiene products, and snacks for students in need.

This year’s event featured a competitive pool of 33 nominations, resulting in seven Distinguished Awards. Each recipient of the Distinguished Award was granted the opportunity to direct a $500 donation to a charity of their choice, ensuring that the impact of their recognition extends directly back into the community. These donations support a wide range of causes, from local food pantries and crisis centers to educational initiatives and environmental conservation.
